About Course

Professional assessment practices provide the final cornerstone of the operation of an effective and compliant registered training organisation. Together with well-planned and executed design and delivery systems, assessment processes represent the last piece of the process and the one that often attracts the most scrutiny. This is simply due to the fact that the end result—the evaluation and adjudication of the student’s skills, knowledge and attitude—is what we tend to measure against government and industry requirements. The method for achieving this end result is, some would say thankfully, a creative and context-based process that is more difficult to align with multiple levels of compliance.

Develop and extend assessment expertise
As a professional vocational educator you already show a keen desire for learning. This is most often demonstrated in the way you conduct yourself in relation to the learners you encounter in your various roles within an RTO or other training organisation. It is now time to focus on improving your assessment skills and knowledge. 1.1 Access, read and analyse current research on assessment and incorporate into own practice 1.2 Source and access opportunities to extend assessment experience and expertise and incorporate this new knowledge and skill into own assessment practice

Practice assessment
As a VET practitioner you would know that new skills learnt are consolidated when a student has the opportunity to practise them. This element takes the concepts you have picked up from your research and provides you with the framework for practising them in a structured, measurable way. 2.1 Demonstrate a range of assessment methods in assessment practice in order to meet the requirements of the related unit or units of competency 2.2 Demonstrate the use of a range of assessment tools to meet the context requirements of a range of candidates

Lead and influence other assessors
Part of your journey as a professional assessor is sharing the growth in your knowledge and expertise with others. In doing so, you gravitate to a position of leadership and increase your personal and professional value to your organisation. To gain this level of leadership, you must be aware of, and practice, high ethical and compliance standards. 3.1 Influence fellow assessors through modelling high standards of ethical and compliance practices 3.2 Establish professional development needs of the assessor group and implement approaches to build the skills and experience of the group

Evaluate and improve assessment approaches
Training organisations, whether registered or not, should develop a system of continuous improvement to support all the assessment processes they use. The benefits can include increased confidence in the system by all stakeholders, compliance with ASQA standards and better alignment with industry requirements. In this section we will cover the various assessment processes and the methods for identifying, implementing and reviewing those processes. 4.1 Systematically monitor the assessment processes and activities of the assessor group 4.2 Propose and implement improvements to assessment approaches
