Every organisation will have its own process for approving a new or updated policy. See the linked example from the Queensland State Government HERE, (Department of Education, Queensland Government, 2022).

For a small business, the owners and/or directors are usually responsible for approving (and often drafting) organisational policies. So you can see that the processes vary vastly – from a series of approvals at different organisational levels over the period of development, down to a single point of contact for all policy approvals. The important concern is that there is a point at which the policy moves from a draft, to an approved policy (awaiting publishing).

Consider the use of a project map, work breakdown schedule, or flow chart. Visual references that highlight checkpoints and milestones within the development process can be a useful tool. Applications such as LucidChart and Microsoft Visio can help you create such a representation.
