2025 Credential Policy
What the policy means in practice
The key distinction is between independent training and assessment, assessment-only work and working under direction.
Independent training and assessment
Section 1A recognises TAE40122. It also recognises a qualifying secondary-teaching credential combined with TAESS00019 or TAESS00024.
Independent assessment only
Section 1B recognises TAESS00019. It permits assessment and assessment judgements, but not the full independent trainer role.
Working under direction
Section 1D covers TAESS00024 and TAESS00028 in relevant contexts. People may deliver or contribute to assessment under direction, but cannot make assessment judgements.
Providing direction and delivering TAE products
Sections 1E and 2C recognise relevant higher TAE credentials, including TAE50122, for providing direction. Section 2A adds requirements for people delivering TAE40122 or TAESS00019; TAE40122 alone is not enough.

Common questions
Training and assessment qualification FAQs
Which training and assessment qualification do I need?
For a complete independent VET trainer and assessor role, start with TAE40122. Choose TAESS00019 for assessment-only work, TAESS00024 if you are a qualified secondary teacher, TAESS00028 for supervised workplace instruction, and TAE50122 for advanced practice or leadership.
What is the difference between TAE40122 and TAESS00019?
TAE40122 has 12 units and prepares a person for both training and assessment. TAESS00019 has three units and supports assessment-only work. Those three units can be credited towards TAE40122 later.
Can a secondary teacher work as a VET trainer and assessor?
Yes, if the teacher holds an eligible secondary-teaching credential and the additional TAE skill set required by the 2025 Credential Policy, commonly TAESS00019 or TAESS00024. Relevant vocational competence and current industry skills are also required.
Can I complete a TAE qualification online?
Yes. SpecTraining offers supported online and live virtual options. Online delivery does not remove practical evidence requirements: some demonstrations, observations and workplace activities must occur in an appropriate context.
Does TAE50122 replace TAE40122?
No. TAE50122 is an advanced qualification for experienced VET practitioners, while TAE40122 is the principal entry-level trainer and assessor qualification. Your existing credentials and selected Diploma specialisation determine the best sequence.
Will my existing TAE units count as credit?
They may. Current equivalent units from recognised skill sets can provide direct credit, while other prior study and experience may be mapped during enrolment. SpecTraining will confirm the exact credit pathway.
