What makes a mentor?

Mentoring is not like coaching, facilitating or even one-on-one training. It requires a formal relationship between a mentor and mentee where tacit knowledge is shared by the mentor to assist the mentee in acheiving their career goals.

Mentoring happens over time and requires regular communication. This should be planned and documented on the mentoring plan and agreed to by the mentor, the mentee AND the supervisors or managers responsible for each party where applicable.

Refer to the partnership agreement template to see the types of information gathered during the mentoring relationship.
