Why SpecTraining has launched the NEW Transition Program from TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment to TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment.

We receive feedback from many experienced trainers and assessors who are still uncertain about the updates to the older TAE40110 qualification and how it affects their compliance as VET practitioners.

Not surprisingly there’s a lot of confusion out there, the changes can seem overwhelming, and it’s hard to know where to start. Many trainers are worried about having to update their skills and knowledge to comply with the new standards, and some are even concerned that their current qualifications might no longer be valid. Naturally this uncertainty can be frustrating and stressful, especially for those who have been in the industry for a long time.

With this in mind SpecTraining has developed this program specifically for these experienced trainers who are looking to re-join the workforce and to upskill.  Our transition program will fill the gaps between the older qualification and the newest release, enabling trainers and assessors to rejoin the VET industry with complete confidence in their knowledge and ability to delivery and assess.

Overview of TAE40110 and TAE40122 Qualifications

Since it was first published in May 2010, the TAE40110 was the required qualification to work effectively in the vocational education and training (VET) sector in Australia. We referred to it as a ‘quasi-licence’, in that it was a legislated requirement to work as a trainer and assessor in the sector. Its aim was to provide the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct your role as a trainer and assessor. The release of the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment was instrumental in standardising the competencies required for individuals to work effectively within VET, removing or combining many skills from the TAA40104 qualification that was release some 6 years prior.

As the sector evolved, specifically with the highlighted issues of adult literacy and administrative skills required by assessors, the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment was reviewed and two additional units were required to stay up to date.

Importantly, in the 20 years from 2004 through to 2024 – there were only TWO requirements to update your qualification; they were: From the TAE40104 to the TAE40110, then the TAE40110 plus two units (often referred to as the gap training). However, individual training organisations may have chosen to require staff to remain as current as possible, thus mandating that they update to the latest version of the TAE when applicable. This would have resulted in one or two more upgrade or transition programs. More about this shortly.

The TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and assessment

In December 2022, the TAE40122 qualification was introduced, with many updated training practices, reflecting contemporary pedagogical approaches and real industry needs. This included the addition of the development of professional development plans, trainer qualification matrices and RPL validations – all common practices in the sector that were not included in the TAE40110.

The changes from TAE40110 to TAE40122 are quite substantial, as the sector has changed a lot in the 12 years between them. We now understand a lot more about how adults learn, about their support needs and literacy skills, and about the things that training organisations expect from their trainers and assessors from the time they start.

The shift to TAE40122 emphasises enhanced competency standards, which ensure that trainers and assessors are equipped with more up-to-date knowledge and practices.

KEY CHANGES FROM TAE40110 to TAE40122

The transition from TAE40110 to TAE40122 represents a significant evolution in the standards and expectations for trainers and assessors in the vocational education and training (VET) sector. This updated qualification places greater emphasis on the integration of technology and the development of competencies that reflect contemporary industry practices. One critical change is the introduction of new units that focus on digital literacy and the application of technology in training environments. As industries increasingly rely on digital platforms, proficiency in these areas has become essential for effective training delivery.

  1. Increased Relevance to Modern Training Practices:

The TAE40122 includes units on facilitating online learning and assessing online environments, reflecting the industry’s shift to virtual delivery methods. It also introduces support strategies for learners with disabilities, highlighting inclusivity.

  1. Practical Application:

The introduction of a professional development unit (TAEPDD401) ensures trainers gain hands-on experience with more common RTO practices.

  1. Flexibility and Breadth:

The expanded number of elective units (6 vs. 1) allows greater tailoring of the qualification to suit specific roles or organisational needs.

  1. Alignment with Compliance and Quality Standards:

Units like BSBAUD412 (Work within compliance frameworks) ensure trainers are well-prepared for the regulatory requirements of RTOs.

  1. Integration of Core Skills Support:

A stronger focus on integrating language, literacy, and employability skills ensures that trainers are better equipped to address learner needs.

  1. Career Advantage:

The updated qualification demonstrates currency and competency in line with the latest VET requirements, which is essential for meeting RTO compliance standards under the Standards for RTOs 2015. The requirement for currency will remain with the new Standards released in 2025.
